I really want to try the old fashioned kind, with the peas you soak.
Anyone have a recipe that's not too complicated?

This one's great! Hope it's what you're looking for:
SPLIT PEA AND HAM SOUP
1 ham bone
1 lb. dry split peas
4 cloves garlic, minced
1 tablepsoon each butter and olive oil
2 quarts water
2 bay leaves
1 lb baby carrots
1 lb spaghetti, broken into 3'; pieces
salt and pepper, to taste
1 can evaporated milk or 1 cup light cream or milk
Empty package of split peas into a colander or bowl. Sort through well, removing foreign matter and imperfect peas. Rinse well. Soak for two hours in 2 cups water.
In a large soup pot or Dutch oven, saut茅 minced garlic in 1 tablespoon of butter and 1 tablespoon olive oil until garlic golden, but not brown in color. Add ham bone, water in which peas have been soaked and 2 extra quarts of water, and bay leaves.
Bring to a boil for 1 minute; reduce heat and simmer, covered for 1 hour. Remove cover and simmer an additional hour or until soup is desired consistency. Add baby carrots during final 20-30 minutes of cooking (may be roughly chopped, if desired, or leave whole).
If you prefer a pureed soup, process using a hand blender before adding carrots.
Taste soup one half hour before serving; add additional garlic or garlic powder and salt and pepper, as desired. Bring a separate pot of water to a boil and cook spaghetti according to package directions. Drain.
Stir in milk or cream 10 minutes before serving. If you have any leftover ham, add at this time. Stir in spaghetti. Remove bay leaves before serving.I have a ham bone, any easy split pea soup recipes?

Use a pkg. of navy beans which are white in color. They will turn a soft pink /beige after cooking, so do not worry that they look white.
If you have a lot of time, toss the beans and the ham bone in a crock pot on low for 5-6 hours, adding seasoned salt and pepper, plus a bit of minced onion-1/2 cup. I like a lot of meat in my ham and beans, so I ALWAYS add extra ham.
The beans will swell up, so put at least 5-7 cups of water in your cooker. Cover and cook. The beans will be easy to pierce with a fork when they are done cooking.
Fast Method: Get a big pot-follow above directions, except bring to a boil ASAP, reduce heat to med. for about 15 mins., then to low until beans are soft. WATCH the water level.
I like to add two cubes of chicken bullion for flavor. If too soupy, make a mix of cornstarch and water and slowly stir in.

Oh yes, this is a piece of cake. I have a really easy recipe that you don't even have to soak the peas for.
In a crock pot put your ham bone, one bad of dried peas (just make sure you check them for stones), 1 1/2 quarts of water (or fill a large crock pot about 3/4 of the way) one large onion, a whole sprig of thyme, and a bay leaf. Cook this on low for about 5 hours. By this time the peas should be soft, although not all the way mushy. Dice up two large potatoes and three carrots and cook on high for about 2 more hours. Make sure that you salt and pepper this liberally at this point. If it starts to get to thick which it may depending on the starchiness of the veggies and the peas add chicken stock to thin. Just make sure that your chicken stock is low sodium.
You can make this same recipe in a pot, but you do have to soak the peas overnight. Also, you have to stir it about once every 45 minutes. It tends to stick to the bottom of the pot.
This recipe also freezes pretty well.
